Who we are

Upsilon Tau Omega Chapter is a multi-generational chapter comprised of like-minded women. We are dedicated to serving the residents of Southern Prince George’s County in Maryland  by “Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood” through Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® program initiatives

Our Story

Beginning

The Upsilon Tau Omega Chapter began with the vision of six phenomenal Alpha Kappa Alpha women — Irene Bullock-Overton, Patricia Bell, Annette Boxley-Drew, V’Nell A. DeCosta, Brenda Skipwith, and Gloria Watson— who saw the need for programs of service in Fort Washington, Maryland. These women took the necessary steps to charter a graduate chapter to serve the residents of Fort Washington and other areas in Southern Prince George’s County.

The women formed an interest group in April 1996 and named the group the "Pink Oyster Interest Group.” They chose the name because it reflects the process it takes for an oyster to become a pearl, hard work and diligence.

On December 7, 1997, 39 sorority members chartered the Upsilon Tau Omega Chapter. The chapter is the 903 chapter in Alpha Kappa Alpha and the 122 chapter in the Notable North Atlantic Region.

Today

Upsilon Tau Omega Chapter recently reached an historic milestone on December 7, 2022, achieving 26 years of service to all mankind. The chapter that began with 39 members today boasts a membership of nearly 200.
